The Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle announced today that the Mammoth Track Club, headlined by Olympian and American record-holder and 2005 and 2009 Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle champion Deena Kastor and 2015 and 2016 Shamrock Shuffle champion Alexi Pappas, will make its debut in the 11th annual Deloitte Elite Club Competition. The Kansas City Smoke will also be back on the men’s side to defend their title.
“The Deloitte Elite Club Competition has grown into one of the most fun and competitive events for USATF-member running clubs in the nation. We are proud of the racing tradition we have built with this competition and with Deloitte’s partnership,” said Carey Pinkowski, executive race director of the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate 40 years of the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle than with a legend like Deena coming back to Chicago. She epitomizes not only the spirit of a champion but of the entire running community.”
The Deloitte Elite Club Competition attracts USATF-member clubs from around the U.S., allowing club teams a unique opportunity to compete on the roads for a $20,000 prize purse and national recognition as one of the best clubs. Last year’s competition featured more than 50 teams, and Chicago’s very own Second City Track Club picked up third-place finishes in both the men’s and women’s elite club competitions.
Three-time Bank of America Chicago Marathon champion and two-time Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle champion Amanda McGrory will be back to compete in the inaugural wheelchair division of the Deloitte Elite Club Competition.
In addition to the Deloitte Elite Club Competition, the event offers the Deloitte Open Team Competition with three divisions: competitive, recreational and corporate. Event organizers of the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle announced today an exciting addition to race weekend: a one-mile event to take place on Saturday, March 23. With entries limited to the first 1,000 to register, the Mile will welcome runners of all abilities – from the next generation of shufflers to local elites – to weave their way through Grant Park.
“There is something iconic and classic about the mile that speaks to runners of every generation,” said Pinkowski. “We are thrilled to be adding this event to Chicago’s running landscape as another way we can all kick off the running season and welcome even more runners into the community.”
Registration for the Mile is now open and will close once the event has reached its 1,000-person capacity. The race will feature four waves that highlight Chicago’s diverse running community: recreational, competitive masters, competitive, and elite. Long recognized as an annual rite of spring, a celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, and the kickoff to the outdoor running season in Chicago, the 40th annual Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle treats runners to a scenic 8K run through downtown Chicago and two-mile walk along Chicago’s lakefront. The 8K run will kick off at 8:30 a.m., followed by the two-mile walk at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 24. Following the race, runners can enjoy live music at the traditional Post-Race Party in Grant Park. In advance of the event, the two-day packet pickup will take place at McCormick Place on Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23. On May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister made history by becoming the first person to run under four minutes in the mile, clocking 3:59.4. While the feat has been accomplished many times over in the last six decades, the lore of the mile remains. To commemorate the iconic status and revival of the mile, the inaugural Mile event will take place on Saturday, March 23 in Grant Park’s Butler Field. In advance of the event, runners can pick up their bib and T-shirt on Friday, March 22 at McCormick Place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. or race morning on Saturday, March 23 in Grant Park’s Butler Field at 9:30 a.m.
